What the NHS Mental Health Services Won't Tell You
The DIY Therapy Toolkit: A People's Solution to the Mental Health Crisis
Mental health issues are on the rise worldwide, with treatment waiting lists growing longer and younger generations facing increasing emotional challenges. Many individuals are prescribed medication without effective alternatives being explored. Without immediate and effective intervention, this crisis will only escalate.
The Mental Health Epidemic: A Growing Concern
Current statistics highlight the severity of the issue:
Around 1 in 8 people (approximately 12–13% of the population) live with a mental health disorder.
3.8 million people were in contact with NHS mental health, learning disability, and autism services in 2023-24.
Many people do not seek NHS support, meaning the true figures could be significantly higher.
Is More NHS Funding the Answer? Or Is There a Better Way?
Maureen Fearon, a therapy specialist and trainer of coaching professionals, believes there is a better way.
"For years, I’ve used highly effective methods that help people find relief quickly. I’m grateful that the WCHBI is shining a light on these alternatives. People deserve access to tools that work fast and have a choice."
A Unique Conference with Proven Solutions
WCHBI have designed this upcoming online event is designed to introduce practical, effective mental health techniques that have often been overlooked and underutilised. The focus is on empowering individuals with strategies to take control of their well-being.
"Life brings unexpected challenges, but with the right tools, we can minimise suffering and maximise personal empowerment."
The NHS Approach: Is It Enough?
When someone experiences a mental health crisis, their first stop is usually their GP. However, NHS resources are limited, and options often include:
Self-help advice and online resources.
Talking therapy referrals (e.g., CBT or counselling).
Medication prescriptions.
Specialist referrals (which often involve long waiting times).
But how soon do people want to feel better? Immediately. And for many, this is possible when they have access to the right tools.

The Reality of NHS Talking Therapies
At a past NHS conference, Maureen was shocked by reported success rates:
CBT Recovery Rate: 45.0%
Counselling for Depression Recovery Rate: 47.6%
"Less than 50% success? And yet, professionals were applauding! This isn’t good enough. People need better options."
A Proven Alternative: Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
A 2014 study led by Professor Tony Stewart (Staffordshire University) examined EFT, commonly known as "tapping." Results showed:
Over 90% of participants no longer met the criteria for Major Depressive Disorder after just eight weeks.
"Why wasn’t it closer to 100%? And why did it take so long? I know what’s possible with this methodology."
Despite these findings, what follow-up studies have been conducted, I have not heard of any. If EFT is significantly more effective than CBT and counselling, why isn’t it widely used?
